So I took the family out to one of those pick ‘em yourself apple orchards about an hour away on Hwy 55. It had the usual offerings like pony/tractor rides, a pet the farm animals area, and of course a little store selling 4oz jars of apple butter for $7. Well this place also had a couple of old guys playing musical instuments, singing songs the whole family could enjoy. You know, the typical classics like Old MacDonald, She’ll Be Coming Round The Mountain, and so forth. Well, then it comes time to sing “It’s a Small World”. And before the song, one of the old guys goes into a speech about how the world is getting smaller, and something about how everyone is from someplace. So he starts pointing at people and families in the crowd and asking them where they were from. Now I should point out that this crowd was pretty white. I mean like white-white. We’re talking whole milk popsicles dipped in alabaster white. Yep, pretty white. Except for this one Asian family.
Now he’s asking people “where ya from?”, and everyone gave their answers…Maple Lake, Buffalo, Plymouth, and so forth. And then he pointed at the mom in the Asian family and it went a little something like this…

Old White Guy- And where are you folks from?
Asian Mom- (smiling) Maplewood!
Old White Guy- (slightly confused) Oh…sure. I mean, where were you from before that?
(It should be noted, no other family was asked this follow up question, and at this point it was like hearing a record skip on a turntable)
Asian Mom- (a perplexed look crosses her face) What?
Old White Guy- Uh, before Maplewood where did you come from?
(The crowd senses what direction this is going in, and it got so quiet you could hear a pin drop)
Asian Mom- (puts hand on hip, cocks her head) ST. PAUL!
(a single cricket chirps in the background)
Old White Guy- Oh…(clears throat) It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears…..
